Last August, I made the decision that I was going to try and drink a gallon of water a day because I knew I needed to be hydrating my body properly. At first, it was tough and I was annoyed because I had to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes (which is something that I know everyone complains about when I tell them that they need to drink more water) but I discovered that this was only happening because my body wasn’t used to so much water being consumed in my system. After a week or so, my frequent bathroom trips went away and I started to notice how much bring hydrated was affecting my body. For the first time in months, I was waking up not feeling tired, my skin was clearing up, and I felt more energized than ever. If there’s any advice that I can give to people, it’s to make sure that you’re keeping yourself hydrated! I can definitely tell the difference in my energy and how I feel overall when I forget to drink my gallon of water. Some may think that drinking this much water can be a hefty task but its really one of the easiest things I have ever done! Here’s my advice on making an important lifestyle change like this one!
1. Buy a gallon sized water bottle
I bought a gallon sized water bottle so that I could fill it up at the beginning of each day and try and track how much water I had already drunk. I found that using a water bottle that has a straw made it easier for me to drink it. I bought mine from Ross, but I have found recently that TjMaxx sells the same exact ones but for a cheaper price. I also got into the habit of taking my water bottle everywhere with me so I had no excuse to “forget” to hydrate myself.
2. Add some flavor
My favorite thing to add to water is lemon! This can help you to want to drink the water because it’s different and adds some flavor. Lemon water helps to detox your system and boost your metabolism. I also discovered other things to add to your water from Pinterest such as cucumber, mint, and apple cider vinegar!
3. Set a reminder
Let’s be real, getting caught up the everyday tasks that we do and remembering to drink enough water can be hard. Honestly, if I don’t set a reminder for myself, there’s absolutely no way that I’m finishing my gallon of water every day. Something that I’ve discovered is setting a timer on the clock app on my iPhone is so beneficial and a great way to help you to remember to drink every hour. Although you’ll be drinking water every hour, make sure that you drink water with any meal or snack that you eat throughout the day.
4. Start as soon as you wake up!
From the minute your alarm goes off, you should start to drink water. Especially if you add lemon, this can be a helpful way to jumpstart your digestive system and will actually help you to feel more awake. Another tip that I can suggest is making sure you drink for 10 seconds every-time you drink water. This will help you to pace yourself correctly and make sure that you finish your gallon by the end of the day.
I guarantee if you follow these 4 steps, you’ll be able to drink a gallon of water every day, and you’ll be able to see a difference in your health! Of course, it’s going to seem overwhelming at first, but you just have to make sure that you’re pacing yourself and remembering to drink every hour!
